A moment is an elastic time measuring tape, which you may stretch and shrink up to the lenght of a period you are instantly speaking about.

Momentous

 

That is the very momentous time (moment) that British army marched into the capital city of France, Paris around 1945.

 

Momentary

 

Some of the momentary measures should be taken as soon as possible to stablize the status quo as the rebel declared they would conquer the city within days.
