In my textbook, when talking about the present progressive tense, it says this:
"Use the present progressive in Spanish only to describe actions in which people are engaged at the moment. Don't use it to describe routine ongoing activities (use the present indicative), to describe generalized action (use the infinitive) or to describe future actions."
Ok, that part seems simple enough. But the it gave this example when talking about the future:
"Estudio con Mario el lunes."
Translated to (according to the book):
"I will study with Mario on Monday."
My question is - why don't I use the future tense for estudiar (estudiare with the accent mark over the E) in that example, instead of the present indicative? Is this the same concept as "Ir + A + Infinitive"? Where in this example, "Voy a la casa," translates to "I'm going (to go) to the house", where "Voy" is conjugated in the present indicative even though it's talking about a future event?
I just don't understand how "estudio con Mario el lunes" translates to "I will study with Mario on Monday."

No se como explicarte adecuadamente la pregunta pero quería decirte que también es correcto traducir la frase como
"Estudiaré con Mario el lunes"
No sé si te ayuda en algo lo que explicaré pero una razón de porque se escribe "Estudio con Mario el lunes" es debido a que se esta explicando cuando se realizara la acción (El lunes en este caso). No estoy seguro si me doy a entender, espero alguien puedo explicarte mejor

lo correcto seria: Voy a estudiar con Mario el lunes. Or better: El lunes voy a estudiar con Mario
o tambien podria ser: Estudiaré con Mario el lunes. Or better say: El lunes estudiaré con Mario.
Is usual in spanish to use the 2nd opcion better than the 1st.
Quizas la oracion que quieres decir es: Estudio con Mario los lunes (This is right)
Quiere decir que estudias especificamente los dias lunes con Mario, y los demas dias talvez estudias con otras personas pero no con Mario.

Lucca, thanks man that makes a lot of sense! In this case, use the future tense if you're not 100% sure that I am going to study with Mario (estudiare con mario el lunes" and use the present indicative tense (estudio con mario el lunes) when I'm 100% sure that it will happen.

"Estudio con Mario el lunes" makes sense in spanish i don't know if it's the same in english, "I study with Mario on monday" (When monday is a future day, not every monday).
And "voy a la casa"... Well, "iré a la casa" translates to "i will go to the house". "i'm going to" translate to "voy".
I'm going to sing -> Voy a cantar
I'm going to read -> Voy a leer.
If you change in spanish de tense of the verb, it translates differently.
Voy a hacer algo -> I'm gonna do something.
Iré a hacer algo -> I'll do something

You're talking about an action that is gonna take place in the future
That's why "Estudio con Mario el lunes." is tranlated as "I will study with Mario on Monday."
