"To go" is American English, used in the US and Canada.
"To take away" is the phrase that's most used in Britain, Ireland, Australia and NZ. I'd say 'Take away', but I wouldn't be surprised to hear 'to go', especially in an American-style outlet or from younger people.

British English is used in Cyprus, so it isn't surprising that the Cypriot barman didn't understand you when you used an American expression. Also, if he was unused to Russian accents, it's possible that he didn't quite catch what you said.

When I was in the Cyprus I tried for a long time to explain for barmen that I want whiskey to go.
He said - what?!
- to go
- to go?
- yes
- I don't know what do you want! Do you whant "Take away"?
