In Spanish - Can someone explain Fue and Era? I know both mean 'was' but which tense and verb?

Por ejemplo:

Fue un error venir aqui. It was an error...

Era hoy o ayer?...Was it today.....?

Which tense and which verb and when to use? Please explain...Thanks

Fue comes from the verb ser in the preterito indefinido tense (something similar to the past simple, sth that happened in the past and is nog happening anymore). Whereas era is the same verb ser but in the preterito imperfecto (sth that was happening in thd past, which is related to actions taking a long period of time in the past)

Fue corresponde a dos verbos : SER (TO BE) and IR (TO GO)

Conjugación verbo SER:

Tú eras

Él/ella era

Nosotros éramos

Vosotros érais

Ellos/Ellas eran

Pasado Simple del verbo IR (TO GO)

Yo fuí

Tú fuiste

Él/Ella/ Ello fué

Nosotros fuimos

Vosotros fuistéis

Ellos/Ellas fueron

Era is the simple past of verb SER (TO BE)

Yo era o yo fui Ejemplo: Yo era profesor or Yo fuí profesor (You must use era cuando se habla de una situación del pasado con duración en el tiempo. Fué se usa para una situación pasada referida a un momento específico.

Example: La película fue muy aburrida (the film was so boring)

Yo era muy guapa en mi juventud. (I used to be pretty when I was younger)
