What does it mean "Give him credit for" in this case please.

We "give credit" to someone or "give someone credit for" something when we want to acknowledge their accomplishment or effort. Thus, when we say "He (was) always smarter (than) I gave him credit for", you acknowledged someone's good work, yet he was often even more intelligent than you thought.
