It deals with "imperfetto" (ero, eri, era..) and "passato prossimo"(sono stato, sei stato, è stato ..).
These Italian tenses refer to something that happened in the past, but Imperfetto is used to describe a past habit or a continuous action in the past, or to describe an action that was taking place when something else happened.

Examples.
1) Quando ero bambino mangiavo sempre cioccolata.
2) Eravamo ogni giorno in spiaggia per giocare a beach volley.
3) Guardavo la TV quando squillò il telefono.

while, Passato prossimo is used to describe an action happened in the past that has a start and a end point.

Example. 
1) Sono stato in America 3 anni fa.
2) Quest'anno siamo andati in vacanza a Tokyo.

 

Credo che sono avvenimenti singoli nel flusso del tempo per cui si usa „stare“ (per un momento), e altrimenti si usa „essere“. Ero stato lasciato alla stazione, ero molto divertente.
