外来語（カタカナの英語）の利点から考えると、コンプライアンスという言葉は企業側にとって不祥事の印象を弱める効果があるので使うようになったというわけです。ハラスメントは、被害者が「ハラスメントで上司を訴える」と言うと、事実の大きさ(価値）が大きく(高く）なるんですね。海外では大きな問題ですから。これで被害者が苦しんでいるという事実を周りに認識してもらえるようになりました。

日本人は良くも悪くも自分の都合に合わせてカタカナの英語をうまく使っていると思います。

カタカナ英語によって物事の見せ方や価値観やが変わるので、今までの事象、認識、概念などが変化していきます。日本人はカタカナ英語を用いて新しい考え方を作っているのです。それが日本社会を成熟させるのであれば、私は歓迎します。

生まれてからずっと使ってきた日本語に対する意味合い(価値観、先入観)は世代間で違います。外来語が広まる時は、ある意味全く新しい別の言葉として、既存の言葉を全世代が、同時期に、同じ意味合いで捉え直す機会でも有り、世代間の価値観の足並みを揃える機会になるのではと思います。

例えば、ハラスメントは嫌がらせという意味ですが、既存の嫌がらせという言葉のままだと、世代間で受け止め方が変わってくるでしょう。昔の価値観と今の価値観はどうしても違いますから。ハラスメントでは無く嫌がらせのままでは、日本社会を上げて今のように「変わるべきだ！」とうるさくなることは無かったかも知れません。日本社会が総力を挙げてグローバル基準に照らして変わっていこうとする時、外来語は世代を超えて皆んなで共有できる旗みたいなものとして使われることがあるのではと思いました。ところで、外来語のハラスメントに対し、日本人は和製英語のパワーハラスメント等を作って上手く自分たちが使いやすい様に手を加えています。

日本人は昔から、外国から伝わった言葉や文化を、元からある日本のものと上手く調和させることに長けてきたと思います。なので、これからも日本人は外来語と上手く付き合っていけるだろうと期待しています。

日本語にできないもの、プール、エレベーター、コンピューターとかは、仕方がないと思います。もともと日本に存在しなかったものだから。

それ以外に英語のカタカナが多すぎると思います。外来語というより、英語のちがう利用法というのか、なんか妙な感じがします。

最近、インフルエンサー(影響を与える人物）というカタカナを見たときには驚きました。カタカナの方がスマートフォンでの見栄えがいいから使うのでしょうか。若い人には英語の方が想像しやすいからですか。いいえ。視覚的である漢字の方が伝わりやすいはずだと私は思います。英語を使うことによって、特別な価値をつけたいのでしょうか。(ブランド化。英語にすると高価な感じがする）

コンプライアンスという言葉も流行りました。これは、法令遵守（順守）という意味で企業が公正公平に業務を遂行することです。広い意味で、企業倫理、社旗規範を守るということです。企業の不祥事が増えてきた昨今、コンプライアンスを徹底しなければならないと言います。これはカタカナにする必要があるのでしょうか。なんだか厳しく聞こえないんですよね、私には。不祥事を起こして、あの会社はコンプライアンスがなっていないといわれても、なんだか悪者に聞こえないんですよ。企業倫理がなっていない、公正ではない会社だと言えばいいのに。まやかしですね。

この風潮が続けば、日本人の日本語能力は落ちるというか、変わってくると思います。少しずつ日本人の国民性も変わってくるかもしれません。すでに明治時代とは違いがあります。別にそれが必ずしも失望的なことではありません。変わるということです。

I think as you can see from Yoko's comment above, the gairaigo that you find in Japanese are best thought of as new vocabulary to be learned in their own right. They bring their own connotations and are not identical in usage to either their words of origin, or their Japanese near-synonyms.

It's helpful to think about why these words exist in Japanese to begin with. Some are true loanwords, first used to introduce a new concept into the Japanese language (think new technological developments ワープロ or foreign cultural elements ジャズ). Other words are used for the different flavor that the foreign words bring.

If I (non-native speaker, mind you) had to assign a value to different groups of words in Japanese, I would say the native Japanese words are the most familiar and unassuming. Chinese words are colder, more precise, and more bookish. English words are often bright and flavorful, but also can be a bit jarring. Basically you can think of each group as being useful in some situations and not others. Using English words exclusively in your speech instead of their Japanese equivalents would make you really stick out as a non-native speaker. Using Japanese words exclusively in a highly-academic lab report or dissertation might likewise give a strange impression.

There's a certain alchemy that underlies the Japanese language (and perhaps all languages that have the lexicon divided thus) that determines what sounds right and what doesn't. Having many synonyms at your disposal and choosing the perfect one for the job is something that takes a lot of time. I guess the takeaway is feel free to lean on your English (and other language) knowledge if it helps you communicate, but be careful not to lean too hard, or it might impart an unintended nuance to your message.

Oh! And always look up the meaning of gairaigo before you assume their meaning to avoid much unexpected weirdness! :D
