When the فعل and فاعل don't agree in gender.

I was a reading a text on الإعراب and I came across this section:

:و تنقسم (أنواع الإعراب) إلى ثلاثة أقسام

:١-ما يشترك فيه الأسماء و الأفعال

Ok, so from my understanding, if a noun is a non-human masculine plural, then it is treated as grammatically feminine, in this case the فاعل is الأسماء is grammatically feminine but the verb يشترك is مذكر. However, I vaguely remember reading something to the effect that said if the الفاعل and الفعل are separated (in this case by فيه),

then the verb can be مذكر or مؤنث even if the فاعل is مؤنث. So in situations like the one above, I can choose to say..تشترك فيه الأسماء or ...يشترك فيه. Unless I completely misunderstood.

I don't know about such rule, but yes, you can say both:

مَاْ يَشْتَرِكُ فِيْهِ الأَسْمَاْءُ وَالأَفْعَاْلُ

مَاْ تَشْتَرِكُ فِيْهِ الأَسْمَاْءُ وَالأَفْعَاْلُ

(Notice that there's no space between و and الأفعال. It's beside the point, but I'm obsessed with the details when it comes to the orthography :D)

This rule, if it does exist, only applies when the subject is in plural. If it's singular, then the verb must be conjugated in agreement with the subject's grammatical gender:

Not:

ما تشترك فيه الاسم مع الفعل

but:

ما يشترك فيه الاسم مع الفعل

My main concern was that I was reading ما يشترك فيه الأسماء والأفعال correctly, where الأسماءُ is الفاعل of يشترك and that it is مرفوع. No matter how long I have been reading and studying Arabic, I have those moments where my الوسواس القهري kicks in and I obsess about the small things, eventhough when looking at the sentence, the only logical conclusion would be that الأسماء is the الفاعل of يشترك. Thanks again for helping me in my madness. Haha
