Hi,

Lorena's explanation was spot on.

Despite + noun phrase

Despite the rain, we went for a walk.

Alan went to work despite feeling sick.

Although + clause

Although it was raining, we went for a walk.

Alan went to work although he felt sick.

The difference between 'although' and 'depsite' is how they are used in a sentence.

* A noun is used after the word 'despite'. The verbs ending in "ing" are actually nouns.

* A subject and a verb are placed after although.

Examples of using 'despite' in a sentence:

1. He did not pass the exam despite all his studying. (noun after despite)

2. Despite having practiced her speech several times, she felt nervous. (noun after despite)

Examples of using 'although' in a sentence:

1. Although she was tired, she won the competition.  (subject and verb after although)

2. Although he studied often, he was not promoted. (subject and verb after although)

Despite has a stronger feeling to it and means "in spite of something"

I went rock climbing despite my fear of heights.

He survived having cancer despite the odds.
