Which approach do you prefer?

This is for all those who have actual knowledge about teaching English. Which approach do you prefer and which one do you actually use most in the classroom? Be honest^^

Steven Krashen: Comprehensible Input

Michael Long: Modified Interaction

Merrill Swain: Comprehensible Output

 

I like the idea and concept of Swain and her Comprehensible Output hypothesis. Yet for me I think I use Comprehensible Input more, as it makes for the traditional classroom setting and we tend to use it as safety net when the pupils struggle with getting a conversation going. What's your opinion?

So Xarmanla you having taken an education while qualifies you to teach in a classroom?

 

Polyglo I like the points you bring to the table and I agree a passive vocabulary is nice to be able to depend upon. Yet I only hear your opinion from a student based side.. what is your experience from teaching?

While I do not eject students from my classroom who refuse to speak our target language (English in my case), almost every student I have taught starts to speak and ask questions from the first lesson and keeps speaking the target language in the classroom.  It is true that they are repeating question/answer dialogs but they are conversing with a student with whom they share no other language than our target.  As a student in my language classes, I was paired with another person who wanted to speak English and seldom spoke to me in our target language.  I wanted the joy I saw in my students who successfully held conversations in our target language and the learnin that took place when they supported each other in a language neither knew well.  Unfortunately, I failed to have any conversation in my target language even though I took two university level classes where I was one of only two in each class who did not speak our target language as a native speaker.  Each of my classmates would sooner switch to English than speak in our target language.

Hej! I prefer Stephen Krashen's method the best because I feel like I can't speak without having a passive vocabulary to fall back on. Especially since I've taken courses that time and time again have disppointed me. They not only forced me to speak before I was ready but expected me to write essays with vocabulary that I didn't have. Not to mention introducing way too much grammar at the beginning. It would turn anyone off from learning a language. But what I absolutely hate are the "credit-driven" students who don't even bother to practise with you. So I think too much output at the beginning is not a good idea whatsoever. 

 

But then again I do all my learning nowadays on my own.
