The Spanish (from Spain) is my 2nd motherlanguage and we have a different accent but that you also have in countries of Latin America all country have a "unique" accent sometimes at in same country you have differents and about also what Carimar say of verbs is different but we can understand and the "vosotros" but is same language so if you speak spanish you are "allow" to understand, happen with portuguese too and we can understand eachother. With a good level of spanish you will understand at which country people are when they talk. How I didn't have to much contact with Spanish out of Spain if someone talk Spanish I don't know from what country they are just if are from Spain or out but when someone talk Portuguese I can automatically say from which country the person is

Hi, I think one big difference is that people from Spain don’t use the preterit when they are referring to the simple past, for example they would say “La semana pasada he ido a Madrid” instead of saying “La semana pasada fui a Madrid”. I found that kind of weird but it’s just because I’m not used to hearing that. For instance last week I was talking with a girl that is learning Spanish and we were talking about past events so she was using expressions such as “ yo he ido, yo he viajado, and so on” so I was trying to correct her telling her to say “yo fui, yo viaje, and so on” but then she told me that she hasn’t learned the forms that I was trying to explain her because she learned Spanish from Spain.

Don't you worry my friend, just go with the flow. Learn both accents if you can, it's really fun when people have no idea of your background by switching intonations. Generally speaking people in Colombia for example, love to hear the spaniard pronunciation; and people from Spain love the Colombian smooth speech. Imaging speaking russian with an Argentinian accent, or Japanese with a French accent. Do it for fun, look at Madonna, Shakira speaking British or Thor who forgot his norwegian accent 10 minutes after the bifrost. The meaning of words are basically the same, with the exception of some idioms which you can learn by making a simply list with the help of native speakers or a good book. Good luck!

I would add that in Spain they use a lot "Vosotros" and in latin american countries is not that common.

There are also differences between latin american countries so I recommend to follow David's advice. Learn one variation first and then the others will be very easy to understand.
