How to memorize and read kanji

I have been learning japanese for 6 months and manage to read some kanji, really it becomes an obstables and so hard to me since knowing kanji is divided into two types :onyomi and kunyomi. is there any book or application or even suggestion on how to distinguish the proper sound of each kanji in a sentence?

Hello Hairil,

I'd like to recommend www.wanikani.com.

As a longtime studier of Japanese, I too struggle with Kanji (and vocab).  The nice thing about wanikani, is that it does all the work of choosing what to study, and keeping your studying organized, for you.

All you have to do is login and learn the lessons it provides, and review the things you've already learned.  It is made to present the lessons in a way that maximizes memory and learning.

I will warn you: it is slow at first, and if you've been studying kanji already, you will probably see many kanji you already know in the beginning.  You can't speed it up, and you can't select which kanji to study.  But, if you stick with it, I'm sure you'll see it's value.

It's made by the creators of the www.tofugu.com and www.textfugu.com websites, so it is a quality product (I'm just a user, I had nothing to do with it's creation).

Lastly, you can try the first two lessons for free.  If you decide to join, it's $8/month for all the lessons.  I was able to use the coupon/discount code "wanikani heart textfugu" to get it for $5 a month, which is a steal.

頑張ってください!

I think that the only one solution is to keep studying. When the kanji is followed by kana (okurigana), it uses the japanese reading, since it will be fot sure a japanese word. (I think there aren't too much exceptions to this rule, but for sure are.) When several kanji form a word, it usually will be a chinese word and those kanji use the chinese reading, but in this case you will find lots of exceptions: words that seems to be chinese, are using the japanese reading; or even there are words that mix both readings. It's crazy.

I used years ago the book Remembering the Kanji, and it was helpful. Is not a complete solution, but it helps to distinguish the kanji by its components, instead its strokes. That way, it becomes much easier.

Now, I became aware of the problem to remember the chinese readings (the japanese readings are not that hard, but I'm not sure why), and started studying with Remembering the Kanji 2 and Anki, which centers in chinese readings. I can't still tell if it will become useful or not, but so I hope.

Good luck.
