The Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is the first road-rail bridge that was designed by China and was made using self-produced materials. (It has two decks.) The upper deck of the bridge is a four-lane road bridge 4589 meters long while the lower deck is a double track rail bridge 6772 meters long. The rail bridge connects the old Tianjing-Pukou Railway and Shanghai-Nanjing Railway. It cuts down the time for trains to cross the Yangtze river from one and a half hours in the past to 2 minutes in the present. The bridge is not only an important transport hub, but also a famous scenic spot. The completion of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge marked a huge progress(huge milestone) in China's bridge building capability/industry. It greatly facilitates the exchange of goods and people between the two sides of the Yangtze River. It plays an enormous role in developing the economy and enhancing people's lives.
