Yes, today is Tanabata. Tanabata Festival is a traditional Chinese festival in a most romantic holiday lovers, but also the most importance over the last days of 1 although more important for the girls.

For those who are not Chinese, Japanese or other east Asian people, Tanabata is the Japanese name for the Chinese festival. Literally it means the 7th night. It is said that on this night, lovers might catch a glimpse of their future beloved by using various rituals such as doing something in a bowl of water. Also on this night all the magpie in the world would disappear for the night when they fly off to heaven to form a heavenly bridge to span across the Milky way so that the celestial ill fated lovers can cross to meet each once a year. For those who are interested in the details of the story should google it. At the same time in China, this is also known as the Beggar's Festival. Again google it if interested. Many have translated this as Chinese Valentine.
