TOEFL question about television advertisement. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? "Television advertising directed toward young children (aged two to five) should not be allowed." Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. My answer: Some people don't think that television advertisements can influence children in a bad way, while other groups think this is unaceptable and should be not allowed. This is discussed over the years and each point has its own advantages. The fact that children at age from two to five can not understand what is the meaning of the advertisement is a point to be considered when thinking about censorship of the content. The kids who are watching the television may not be able to get what the advertisement are really meaning. By that fact, the content will not influence the way the kids behave. Another point of view is that children can see what is done in the advertisement and try to do the same. In the case of advertisements which have some kind of violent content, this could be a bad influence for the children's growth. With a big amount of violent content introduced, the kid may think what is done is a good thing and start acting the same way. In my opinion, the children can be allowed to watch television advertisements because this kind of content will not be a deep influence in how the kid will behave. Besides, the children who are geting influenced by the advertisements could learn from this if the parents are teaching what is good or bad. It's a way of show to kids what is bad and why it is bad. Furthermore, the kind of content that is directed toward kids are, in general, not mean and without violent or offensive content, since the television channels don't want to lose this public.
