In 1930s the painting known as Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet was removed from the official catalogue of Rembrandt’s works, because this painting was believed not to be created by the famous dutch painter since there were some differences from Rembrandt’s stile and inconsistencies that were not usual for the painter.
First, that seemed to be strange was the combination of a linen cap that showed that a person on the portrait was a servant and a fur collar that a servant couldn’t have, although Rembrandt usually paid a great attention to details. Second, there were some mistakes in the lightening, that’s also not typical for Rembrandt’s works. And finally the most of Rembrandt’s works were painted on only one wooden panel, but the portrait, mentioned above, were painted on few peaces of wood glued together. Because of these facts it was believed Portrait of an Elderly Woman… not to be created by Rembrandt.
But lately it was established that the fur collar was painted over a top of the original portrait few centuries later. Somebody wanted to make a portrait greater, that’s why he painted the luxurious detail, without any changing in the lightening on the woman’s face and made the painting bigger by adding several wood panels to the original one.
These facts prove that the Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet is indeed one of Rembrandt’s works.
