Since I hadn't written English texts for a while, to get the feel of writing in English, I decided to translate the interesting article I came across when I was net surfing. The article is on the prefecture I live in. It was my first challenge to translate a long Japanese text written by someone else into English. I found it pretty difficult because the words were not mine, but I did my best. How can the uninviting place be shown in popular anime so often? It is said there is neither amusement district nor tourist attraction in Saitama, i.e., the prefecture is featureless. This could be the answer for the question. In most cases, the actual name of a place does not appear in an anime. The place is just a background rather than a scene. What is suitable for a background of an anime is not a megalopolis like Tokyo or the quaint countryside, but an ordinary city. It should be 'some place in Japan'. Once a landmark like the Tokyo Tower or Kinkaku-ji Temple, which reminds you of a specific place like Tokyo or Kyoto, appears in an anime, you would start to visualize the real world. It might bring some unnecessary images to your minds. On the other hand, a view in Saitama is something everywhere. It is something nowhere at the same time. This anonymousness would be one of the reasons that views in Saitama are regarded as suitable for the backgrounds of anime.
