Some Thoughts during Accent Reduction Process First, let me make a little introduction of myself. I come from Sichuan (Sezuan), since I was 13 years old I began to learn English. At that time, listening stuffs were only tapes, without internet, without youtube ... and of course, my English teacher with strong Sezuan accent was also a source. Now, I am 28 years old, in Germany, and in daily life using German and English, and sometimes also in Chinese when I call my parents or chat with Chinese friends. Although it doesn't have much negative effect on the communication, my Sezuanese accent is still very strong when I speak English. Therefore, I have been striving to reduce my accent and have downloaded many materials from the internet, also, with help from some native English speakers from the U.S. and also I have asked some question in this forum. Now I'm grateful to the people who ever helped me with that. After some "research", I found some differences between English (here referring to A. E.) and Chinese (mandarin with the Sezuanese accent). I want to share these findings, also, you can call, experiences, to the people who are struggling to improve your spoken English especially sth to do with accents, and also who are learning Chinese with English knowledge. Ok, let me go to the point. 1. Little mouth movement when speaking Chinese, compared with English. You can watch your mouth movement in a mirror, and that's very noticeable. 2. Tongue position is not so important when speaking Chinese, at least, no big position changes (I think, that's true for people from South China.) So, when I spoke vowels in English, my tongue was hard to stay stable, I mean, flat. So, that's why many Chinese native speakers who already have a beautiful A.E or B. E (whatever, just not chinglish) accent said that it's helpful to have a stone (dangerous) or a candy (safe) in the mouth to practice English. That's what I found. Thank you for your attention. If you have some comments or your own experiences which you want to share here. Please feel free to post them here. Thank you once again.
