I have read many times “and worse” at the end of a sentence, such as in this one: “She wasn’t dressed for the moors and her shoes were soon mud-caked and worse.” What does mean “worse” here? Thanks.

Being mud-caked wan't their only problem, but the author doesn't give us more specific detail. They might have also started to come apart, smell bad, make noise, hurt her feet, etc.
