For a long time, the academic circles have not understood the essence of 【novels】 clearly and discussed it vaguely. There is such an academic trend of thought spreading all over the world, that is, 【novel】 do not need to tell a story, and storytelling is backward and third rate【 novels】 can only do. Based on such a background, this paper clarifies why the essence of 【novel】 is 【story】 and why the nature of 【novel】 is the nature of 【story】 through the methods of observation, literature research, conceptual analysis, deduction and induction. At the same time, this paper points out the essence of the【 novels】 is the common 【complexes】 and 【roads】 of 【humans】. Further, the paper points out that the lack of clear understanding of the essence of 【novel】 and plot, the relationship between contradiction and 【story】, and artistic reality is the fundamental reason for the phenomenon that telling a story is a third rate novel. Starting from the interpretation of artistic reality, this paper points out that the aesthetic judgment on the theme of the【 story】 is the key to understand what is artistic reality, what is realism, and presents the basic relationship between the three essential factors of 【novels 】and the three propositions of literary and art criticism, which can effectively get rid of those boring disputes between serious and popular literature, also can lay the foundation for 【story】 poetics. Based on those above arguments, the paper puts forward some views on the current academic research pattern, including some existing problems about the description and construction of 【novels】 history, what division should be used to replace the original division of pure literature, serious literature and popular literature, and how to measure the value of novels, so as to restore the reputation of the【 story】.
