Hello everyone:! Is the word “show up” formal or informal?! I am asking because a reporter was Interviewing someone (which I guess he happens to be a general of a military). The reporter asked: what happens if people don’t show up for covid 19 vaccine (or something like that) but a word the reporter did use was “show up”. Now my question: isn’t the word “show up” informal? Now I am confused!!! How do u guys treat the formal and informal words? I thought informal words are for informal things (not for interviews, conferences etc) . I am asking bc Spanish does not really deal with formality and Informality. Or perhaps English is like that too? And maybe I am the one worrying about something that I should not be paying much attention to? Note: Currently I am in the process of understanding formal and informal language by watching tv and seeing how it should be used and honestly i am starting to feel a little confused and thought it was easier to understand than I thought. Thanks for your help! Have a great week!

I'm a native English speaker. "Show up" is sort of in the middle. It is not slang, but it is not formal. The formal word in this context would be "report" or "present" and you'll probably find the military guy using that, but "show up" is not so informal that it was wrong of the interviewer to use it. There are less formal phrases for "to attend/to report", for example: rock up / show (without the up).

I think the fact that it was an interview does not determine what language formal or informal should be use. It's the person who is the guest determines that. For example, with a youtuber, you can make informal interview and even use slang etc. But interview with the Queen, or a person who is,let's say a president of some country, that's definitely a formal language situation. And I don't know if show up is considered informal. I'm really looking forward to seeing some natives reply to that, maybe muy response could bump the post ;)
