What is the difference between the prefix "Gi" and "ni" in Bisaya?

Hi Yoshi! I noticed that you are interested with Cebuano. Would you want to be language partners? I’m a native Cebuano speaker. I’m also a community tutor teaching the language. Anyways, Japanese is my target language to learn. Would you like us to study in exchange for our knowledge with our respective languages? Hope to hear from you soon. Thank you!

They are both used in a past tense form and almost the same translation. It's just that the "Gi" is more intentional and specific than "Ni'.
Example:
Gipunit niya ang bato - He picked up THE stone - there's specificity on the stone he picked up and the intention is to pick up a stone.
Nipunit siya ug bato - He picked up A stone - he could pick up a stick if that is what available nearby.
I hope this help. :)
