The bar chart illustrates the change in the percentages of the options which students chose after graduating in 2013 and 2018. Specifically, the proportion finding a job decreased from 68.7% to 60.7%. In stark contrast, the percentage who applied for postgraduate study increased from 26.3% to 34%. Notably, those who decided to work on their own/start up a business doubled from 1.% to 2.6%. There are two fundamental factors involved in this phenomenon. For one thing, more and more undergraduates have awareness of the benefit improving their degree. High level education not only can enrich their spiritual world but also can enhance their competitiveness to obtain a decent job. Thus,most students would rather choose postgraduates than take up an occupation (this isn’t true, there were still more who got a job). Second, the economy of China has developed at a rapid speed. Therefore, there are a large number of golden opportunities for undergraduates who want to work on their own. (It’s still a very small percentage). Compared with being employed by companies, running a business by themselves can let them have more freedom. From my perspective, every option you make by yourself is correct. However, if you do not have the pressure of money, it is advisable not rush into the job market. Applying for a postgraduate place has a lot of benefits, such as broadening your horizons and offering ample time to let you think about more deeply about your future career. No matter what choices you make, persistence and hard work is the key to success.
