Is "Je voudrais" often used?
School French always taught to ask for something using je voudrais. "Je voudrais una café svp" for example, But is je voudrais used in everyday French or is it a formal way of asking for something.
What are the common expressions used in everyday French to ask for/request something?
"Can I make an appointment for...."
"I'd like 2 kilos of...."
"How long will it take..." etc

yes ,when you go to make shopping ,you must say usually "je voudrais(des pommmes,1 kilo de pdt ou 1 litre de lait! etc....).
mais tu peux dire aussi "j'aimerais" au lieu de "je voudrais"
Certains disent "je veux"  mais ce n'est pas poli!

Pour demander un café, je dirais seulement "un café, svp".
Je préfère "pourrais-je avoir un café" (could I have a coffee?) à "je voudrais un café" (I would like a coffee). On peut aussi demander "puis-je avoir un café" (can I have a coffee).

Pour un rendez-vous, je dirais "j'aimerais prendre rendez-vous pour une coupe de cheveux" (I would like to have an appointement for a hair cut) et enchainerait avec "est-ce que vous avez de la disponibilité pour ce vendredi, vers 3 heures ?" (Do you have an opening this Friday, around 3 o'clock?)

Pour "how long will it take" je dirais " Ça va prendre combien de temps"
