May I use 'set' instead of collection of something?

Yes, you can. A collection of knives, forks and spoons is a cutlery set. A collection of commemorative stamps is a set of stamps. A collection of prints by an artist can be referred to as a set of prints.

The OED lists set as having 47 definitions. Specifically, set, in this instance means "what is whole". A collection, however, is an assembling of things sharing a characteristic. Therefore, I think the answer is: no.

No, you can't.

A set is not a group built up buy a buyer a collection is. A set is a group sold together meant (by the seller) to stay as a group.
Buyer builds group part by part = collection
Seller builds group to be sold together and remain together = set

Set is one of english word which has a lot of meaning. "Set" could mean to configure, to build up something and so on. If you want to use "set" for replacing "collection of something" It could be, but it used for explaining a group of something that should be put together, not separately. For example: I will buy a set of uno card. From this case we can learn that a "set" of uno card should be bought whole, not by single card. That's my opinion.
