There are similarities and there are differences as well...basically both languages derives from the same root of language. Buts over time, slang and dialects were developed that made those two languages differ especially when you are speaking it..things like intonation, the choice and use of words. However putting those factors aside, I think both can understand each other on a certain level. Hope I've helped a bit.
