不好意思：ごめん、悪いね、すまないね 对不起：ごめんなさい、すみません

両方も詫びる言葉といっても伝えることが微妙に違います。 不好意思＝すみません（路上で人に何かを尋ねるときも可） 对不起＝ごめんなさい、申し訳ない　（より丁重なお詫び）

1.不好意思/对不起 Excuse me when used at begining of the sentence 不要意思,这个电话可以用一下吗 对不起, 请问最近的银行在哪 2.不好意思 shy as above as well as shame(usual blame self/the others) 你考的这么差,我都不好意思和别人说我教过你 3. 对不起 sorry. 对不起,我错了 sorry I'm wrong. but in chinese 对不起 hasn't the meaning of regret. you couldn't use 对不起 to I'm sorry to hear that

不好意思 is for bigger fault

In some cases, they are the same thing. 不好意思=对不起。 But in other cases, 不好意思 means feel shy to do something. e.g. 他不好意思和她说话。
