I believe the essence of friendship has not changed because of the internet. The feeling/connection between friends is still very much the same as it always had been. What the internet did change though, is how people can expand their social circles and find new friends. Before the internet, people could only meet friends personally through real-life contact (at school, work, church, community gatherings, etc...); but now, it is much easier to have a larger social circle because it's easy to meet friends from all around the world with the help of the internet.
