Did Buddha place himself as ''God'' when he sent his first converts to help enlighten the world? Did Buddhism start with no gods? Were those gods in Buddhist temples and shrines mere additions to the original religion?

He could have placed hinself where he wanted, he was just a mortal. But Jesus is immortal, why? because He is God. The question itself is deluring, people are dying because of lack of knowledge. Buddishm started wih no gods cause there are not many gods but One God, The Creator, and Saviour.

That is an intresting question i dont know but i would think not because they are all about harmony with nature but then again every religion has a ruler (god) so it is 50/50 and because it has been going on so long it wouldbe hard to tell

(I'm buddhist) Buddhism is not centered around "God" or "Creator". Actually, the "gods" you're talking about are probably boddhisatvas, enlightened beings who wish to help everyone and everything to achieve nirvana. Their pureness and dignity is so high that there are often temples and prayers dedicated to them. The Buddha is also often treated like that. In addition to this, there are some "gods", though buddhism isn't mentioning them often, because they're not that important. And not every tradition mentions them. There is still karma upon them, so they need to achieve nirvana too.
