How to distinguish between a fridge(refrigerator) and a freezer in Chinese? I am a little confused about how to say ‘fridge' and 'freezer' in Chinese. When I look the words up I get the same word for both 冰箱. The problem I have with this is, a fridge(refrigerator) is not a freezer. A Fridge keeps food cold (but not frozen). A freezer keeps things frozen. If they are two different things how can they have the same name? If you say to me, put it in the 冰箱, do you want it in the fridge or the freezer. Please help, I'm so confused here! Thank you!

冰箱 is a subset of 雪櫃。 雪櫃: 雪 refers to snow , 櫃 refers to shelf 冰箱: 冰 refers to ice/frozen, 箱 refers to box Refrigerator in German language: Kühlschrank Kühl: cool schrank: cupboard In this sense, Cantonese language is similar to German in that the word /phrase actually is inherently descriptive, unlike the word 'refrigerator. Once you realize how the Cantonese language constructs words, then it will be rather easy to pick up this language!!!!

Apart from 冰箱, we have other words :冷柜 or 冰柜, which can be roughly translated as the freezer you discribed. Put it into the 冰箱. Normally we mean put it into the fridge.
