Actually there are several meanings/uses for each of them. I think a definition from some book would be more appropriate. "To" is usually a direction/pointer: come to me, go to hell, he is related to John, etc. "By" is usually related to means of use or owner of the action: done by me, connected by a wire. "For": a gift for you, pay for a purchase, something is done for somebody.
