It means that today, the meeting is a well-known event. At the time it happened, nobody knew how significant the meeting would be in the future. Today, with the benefit of retrospect, we know about this meeting and why it was important.

In my opinion, I think this sentence expresses the meeting which was not famous at the time of its occurring but uptil now it became famous.
