what does "the chorus of"mean? isn't "la Revue negre" a magazine? When Josephine Baker made her Paris debut in the chorus of La Revue negre, she was only nineteen and completely unknown. Born in St. Louis, she had sung since the age of eight in the nightclubs of Harlem. In Paris she appeared on stage in the nude and created a sensation. Her beautiful black-idol body, her ravishingly lovely bust, her delicate arms and long legs combined with her agility and exotically charming voice to assure the American performer an instantaneous success. Nothing in the history of French theatre could compare with it. Whereas the Ballets Russes drew an elite class, the Revue negre had immense popular appeal, and it made a star of Josephine overnight. This was the order that Chanel, more than anyone else in Paris, understood how to capture and exploit. She too was thirsting for authenticity and naturalness. Beginning in 1925, the Chanel style would develop and stand for the entire notion of modernity.
