I like this subject so let me say something more. The followings facts are true: F1) /to like/ does not translate /piacere/. F2) In almost every Italian sentence where appears the verb /piacere/ the English translation has the verb /to like/ in it. (F1) and (F2) are only in apparent contrast, which is explained in the previous box.

This usual error stems from the fact that the true word-by-word translation of c) Questo gatto piace a me. which is equal to d) a me piace questo gatto. is NOT with 'to like', but with 'has the power of attracting' E1) This cat /has the power of attracting/ me. E1 is very ugly so we fix it using 'to like' completely changing the grammar, but leaving the meaning undisturbed. E2) I like this cat. Keep in mind that (E2) is always a 'free' translation of the original sentence, as a translator of novels is allowed to do, but not a beginner learner.

In italiano il significato di 'I like ABC' viene espresso tramite ABC che diventa soggetto e esercita un potere su di me, e la persona viene introdotta da un complemento indiretto (complemento di termine). (When ABC is a thing) In italian the meaning 'I like ABC' is expressed as ABC becoming a subject that ha a power on me. The person is relegated to the role of an indirect object. The same holds when ABC is a living being or an abstraction. And then another little step is needed, that is to take the 'mirror image' of the Italian sentence, therefore resembling the English sentence. Let's see: 1a) I like logic. 1b) Logic exerts a power over me. 1c) La logica piace a me. 1d) A me piace la logica. (mirror image) 2a) K likes J. 2b) J exerts a power over K. (power of attraction ,whatever ...) 2c) J piace a K. 2d) A K piace J. (mirror image) As you see the order of (a) is very similar to the order of (d), but THAT only increases the confusion, as the similarity hides the BIG differences! If you stop at step (c) you might get it right soon. Disregarding the choice between /essere/ and /avere/, you used /ho/ which is first person, you should have used /ha/ (third person), and have coherence.
