Pronuncation of "đã" and "sẽ" as well as other common nouns with this tone (North) Hello! I am currently studying Vietnamese with the standard pronunciation of the words which I believe is closer to the Northern way of speaking than the Southern. I'm learning with the Assimil book series for those who know it. This question may only be answered by those familiar with the accent from the North, as where I am in the book, they are presenting me this accent so that I get used to it. They will present me the accent from the South in the upcoming lessons. While listening to the audio, I find that "đã" and "sẽ" are pronounced more like "đả" and "sẻ". If this is correct, my guess is that those words that are very common are being pronounced very quickly and they slowly turned into the hỏi tone rather than the ngã tone. Am I right? Thank you!

I don't know your books which you're listening. But in the Northern accent, "đã" and "sẽ" are right. The perfect Northern accent has 5 characters "ngã" "hỏi" "nặng" "huyền" "sắc". They make Vietnamese become diverse So people don't turn any character though they talked very quickly. I think your books are about closer to the Southern way of speaking than the Nothern ???? It's just my opinion.Because in some area, people tend to turn into the "hỏI" tone rather than the "ngã" tone especially in speaking. Anyway, your Vietnamese is not bad when you can ask about "hỏi" and "ngã". It is one of many differences in dialects in Vietnam.

Hello Valeuraph, As a Vietnamese person who comes from the North, I am pretty sure that we don't turn the tone of "ngã" to "hỏi" even when we speak fast. Anyway, it would help if you share with us the video so we can recognize what kind of dialect the speaker has. Probably, he/she came from Central/Southern Vietnam.
