I've heard 3000 words can allow you to have decent conversations. Not positive though.

Men use more words than women the average man will use about 800 to 1,000 different words a day. A woman however may use up to 2,000. It takes about 100 core words to understand most sentences but up to 2,000 to speak conversationally and anything more is fluency
