A specific number would be singular but an unspecified number (where the exact amount in not know) would be plural.( Also the preposition "of" is used with the singular.) Example We saw hundreds of birds flying in the sky. We saw 200 birds flying in the sky. I hope this helps. Cheers! Shawn
