Sorry it is hard to say. It could mean to get over the past feelings or move on. Suburbs can be boring places for young people since you are usually trapped at your house unless you havr a car. He may be saying he used to hate the suburbs but is now starting to appreciate them in some way. Or he could be speaking more literally and saying he visited those places and it brought back his feelings/memories from the past.
