Горит что-то само, itself. Например: горит дом, горит лампа, горят щеки от стыда Жечь можно только что-то, directionally . Жечь траву. Зажечь свечу. Сжигать мосты (не оставлять пути отступления).

The house is on fire ‒ дом горит (гореть). Someone set the house on fire ‒ кто-то поджёг дом (жечь).

If you mean that something is hot/burning, then "жжёт/жжётся" means that when you try to touch it,it burns YOU (you feel pain). Жжётся can also describe that painful feeling a medicine induces when you apply it to the wound. "Горит" describes the process of burning itself ("свеча горит"). "Жжёт" also obviously describes an activity when someone burns something.
