Rancher: person who owns a ranch with cattle usually. Cowboy: a horseman who rounds up and herds the cattle to new grazing areas or to be shipped to market. Cowhand: similar to a cowboy but not necessarily mounted on a horse. I am sure an American will give you a fuller explanation!
