In sentences 1 and 6 I feel the word you may want to use is "when' not 'while', because while makes it feel like the men 'hurt' or 'broke' their foot and then kept 'hurting' and 'breaking' their foot many times the whole time that they were running or playing football. I could be wrong if you are thinking something else. That's just how it sounds as a native speaker in normal conversation.
