I don't think it's very easy but I really enjoy it. There are just a lot of words that can mean a bunch of things and the grammar for me is a bit difficult. Plus there 3 different writing systems. The first two are easy, hiragana and katakana. The third: Kanji is definitely the biggest. I've been told to be able to read a newspaper you should know between 2500-3000 characters.
