I asked that to my Chinese Teacher also. I remember it is called staple food. But you cant use it like 主食. In Chinese when talking to a friend in a restaurant you can ask them what kind of 主食 we should order (I kind of remember something like this in my chinese text book). But in English it is not commonly used.
