Hiragana vs Katakana I'm currently learning Japanese language. I've started by learning the Hiragana. I have memorized the characters already including the combination. I'm currently on the process of memorizing the Katakana. I've gained a few Japanese vocabulary thru watching anime. The characters of January in Hiragana and Katakana greatly differs. I can already read Hiragana characters. This is the character for January in Hiragana: いちがつ ---> I-CHI-KA-TSU This is my reading of January in Hiragana characters. But in Katakana, it is written as: 一月 -----> TSUKI My problem lies on what to use? Will I use the Hiragana character reading for my sentences or use the Katakana? Thanks for anyone who would reply to this.

Generally, we don't use katakana for January, it's 一月(いちがつ / ichigatsu). ONE MONTH is written as the same in kanji 一月 but it's read as ひとつき / hitotsuki, they don't mean the same. Katakana is used for the words from other languages, names for person, the place and the country from overseas except some. I hope this helps you.

Hiragana looks (as you well know) like this: あえいおう Katakana looks like this: アエイオウ 一月 (ichigatsu) is neither Hiragana nor is it Katakana (Hiragana and Katakana are called the Kanas). It is Kanji. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanji 一月 by the way means first moon :)
