what is the difference between condolance and consolation 1.When I suffer a setback, one of my friends said cheer up! --- So, he just gave me his condolances or consolations? 2.People lost their houses in an earthquake. --- So, the president gave his condolances or consolations to those people? 3. Someone's relative passed away. --- So, people sent their condolances or consolations in the furneral? Thank you very much!

1. He offered me his support/encouragement [consolation*] over my setback 2. The President offered his condolences to the people who had lost their houses. 3. People sent their condolences [to the bereaved family] at the funeral *consolation is given for serious and painful losses, often death of a loved one. Consolation is personal, condolences are official.
