To run up an overdraft Some days ago I came across this phrase: "to run up an overdraft at the bank". I can perfectly understand its meaning, but I was wondering if the verb "run up" can be replaced with a more formal option. Any suggestions? Thank you so much.

"Run up" is not informal or less formal and is the most perfect way to describe that state of financial affairs. Do not try to use other wording in the mistaken belief that it would be better. In fact, it would be much worse English.

"had an overdraft at the bank" or "created an overdraft of my account at the bank" or "resulted in an overdraft at the bank". I like the last one myself.
