“Gross,” Leah says, and she and Abby exchange smiles. ???
“I had no idea your eyes were so gray,” Leah says. She turns to Nick, incredulously. “Did you know?”
“I did not,” Nick affirms.
“Like, they’re kind of charcoal around the edges,” she says, “and lighter in the middle, and then almost silver around the pupil. But dark silver.”
“Fifty shades of gray,” says Abby.
“Gross,” Leah says, and she and Abby exchange smiles.
I would like to know what does "Gross" here mean. Thanks.

Abby's comment "Fifty shades of gray" is also the title of a popular, rather smutty novel, so her comment has a sexual connotation.

Gross is disgusting - it comes from American English but most English speaking people use it now.

gross > disgusting /something you find sickening ( that is how it appears to you )
It is a very common expression that normally does mean as severe as above , but it does have the same meaning to a degree ( among friends).
Eating grasshoppers is something I cannot do . I think that is gross!
