Question about a line of a sitcom
I'm watching a old sitcom called The Golden Girls. Blanche‘s niece Lucy came to visit Blanche, and she said:"I met a gorgeous, single doctor on the plane. In fact, I'm supposed to meet him in a half hour, if that's OK."
Blanche said:"But darling, you just got here."
Lucy said:"Aunt Blanche, you always said, If you've got a stallion eating oats out of your hand, best close the gate before you give him the sugar."
What does this sentence mean?
When Blanche knows that Lucy is in love with that doctor, She said:"I don't believe it. Imagine, landing herself a doctor, and she still wants to finish college."
Dorothy siad:"That should give them something to talk about back in Dogpatch."
What does Dorothy mean?

"Dogpatch" is a reference to an old comic strip called "Lil Abner." The residents of Dogpatch were lazy, uneducated, and avoided progress. Dorothy is suggesting that Blanche's attitude about Lucy's desire to complete her education is similar to that of the residents of the fictional Dogpatch - lazy and avoiding progress.
