How does the Italian 'the' work? First off, what are the different forms of the Italian 'the', and secondly when do you use which? Are they dictated by gender of words or am I completely off? Thank you so much for your help! Rachel

il, lo, l', i, gli - male la, l', le - female of course in some other cases you have to put it together etc. I think most of the rules are the same as in english for the

In italian "THE" (definite article) depends on the gender of the word and also if the word is in the singular form or in the plural. Masculine: il (and l' if vowels), lo* *lo - used when there is s, g, ps, gn and x Examples: il - il giornale l' - l'amico lo - lo psicologo Plural masculine: il --> i il giornale - i giornali lo --> gli lo zaino - gli zaini il -->gli (when there is a vowel) l'amico - gli amici Feminine: la (l' if there is a vowel) Examples: la donna l'amica Plural feminine: la -->le la donna --> le donne le idee (even if there is a vowel, in the plural there is no l')
