What does the word "canopy" mean?

Hi Pagm,
The canopy is the upper most layer of a rainforest usually consisting of the leafy branches of the tallest trees. However, the concept of a 'canopy' carries over into other things which are relatively similar to the canopy of a rainforest. The example you have given is a good example of using canopy in context foreign to its original definition, well done!
Another example is that of a large tent usually for day festivals or large gathering of people. Whilst one could consider the fabric that goes over a large tent for a festival as a canopy, it would sound strange to call it anything other than a tent.
